Walker residents will soon have a new way to stay active and connect with neighbors. The Walker 4-H Club, in partnership with the Walker Community Betterment Association (WCBA) and NEVC FFA, is working to rehabilitate the existing tennis court at Walker City Park and transform it into multiple pickleball courts.
The project is being funded through WCBA support and small grants secured by Walker 4-H and NEVC FFA. Work has been divided into three phases.
Phase 1 is already complete. A huge thank you goes to Leslie and Micah Gayman for soft washing the court and preparing it for repairs. Their hard work made an incredible difference in the appearance of the surface.
Phase 2 is currently underway and includes repairing cracks, sealing seams, and leveling uneven areas. Phase 3 will add permanent pickleball court lines, creating multiple courts for community use.
To introduce the community to the sport, Walker 4-H will host free pickleball demonstrations and beginner instruction on June 25 and June 26 from 5:00–7:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come learn the rules and try the game.
Following the demonstration on June 26, Walker 4-H will host a Pickleball Tournament Fundraiser to help raise money for the final court striping and project completion.
This project is a great example of local organizations working together to improve our community and make better use of existing facilities. If you would like to support the project, donations can be made through the WCBA website or by contacting a WCBA board member.
We look forward to seeing the community enjoy the courts for years to come!
